More The Love Bug videos. A disgusting creature that burrows into someone's brain when they least expect it and then lays eggs which then travel through your blood stream an. In 1969, a different kind of Beetlemania swept America, as The Love Bug won millions at the box office. After a limited run during the Christmas season of 1968, the Disney film went to wide release in the spring and raked in $51,264,000. Only three films earned more over those two years — Butch Cassidy. The plot: Jim Douglas, a racing driver who's down on his luck, wanders into a snooty car showroom in search of a new vehicle. He is quickly shown the door by its snob of an owner, Mr Thorndyke, but not before he sticks up for a 1963 VW Beetle which has appeared on the showroom floor as if by magic. The car follows Jim home and through a series of events too ridiculous to recount, Douglas becomes its owner. Named Herbie by Jim's mechanic Tennessee, the car helps Jim to a succession of race wins, and in the process attracts the attention of the nefarious Thorndyke. In a nutshell: While it probably deserves its status as a bona fide childrens' classic, The Love Bug is something of a mixed bag for anyone over the age of its target demographic. The fact is, it hasn't aged as well as some of the other titles in Walt Disney's back catalogue; indeed it's neither as awe-inspiring as the animated classics, nor does it boast the generational cross-over appeal of recent releases such as Lilo & Stitch or Bolt. That having been said, children under the age of 10 are pretty much powerless to resist the film's charms and even the most cynical viewers may be susceptible to being sucked in. The reason for this is The Love Bug is one of the most blatantly manipulative films that has ever been released. Its secret weapon is of course, Herbie, the disarmingly adorable 1963 VW Beetle whose antics are the very heart and soul of the film. That the film-makers are able to use a machine to tug on the audience's heart-strings so effectively is a testament to the car's sheer force of personality. After all, we don't often confer human emotions on vehicles, now matter how prominently they feature in the films reviewed in this column. Thanks to the Beetle's engaging style - as well as the film's cunning editing, cute musical score and witty set-pieces - Herbie comes across as a fully realized character, with considerably more appeal than most of the human cast. The rest of the film hasn't aged nearly as well, however; the special effects look dated, the plot is thuddingly obvious and the screenplay is hokey and riddled with groan-worthy jokes. The cast is enjoyable if mostly very dull - two notable exceptions being Buddy Hackett and David Tomlinson who are both so completely over the top they pretty much defy criticism. Michele Lee is the real gem of the bunch and its largely down to her superb work that Carole sidesteps becoming a standard love-interest cliche and comes across as smart, independent and enchanting. A box-office smash when it was released (decmiating such high-brow classics such as Midnight Cowboy and Butch & Sundance) The Love Bug was one of the highest grossing films of 1968. It also went on to spawn three sequels, none of which are as charming, or indeed as good as the original. It may lack the depth to entice anyone outside its core audience but it's solid family entertainment. As long as the children in the family aren't teenagers. Best bit: Well, Herbie, obviously. Worst bit: Herbie's suicide attempt which made us feel incredibly sorry for the poor little car. And then we felt incredibly stupid for feeling sorry for a car. Random fact: Herbie had to audition for his part in the film. The VW Beetle model was picked out from a lineup of cars from a variety of manufacturers including Volvo and Toyota. Should appeal to: The VW Beetle fan club, families plonked in front of the TV on Bank Holiday Monday and children of the sixties who are in the mood for nostalgia. Worth watching? The Love Bug is an essential part of any child's movie collection.

Just as Olive's story is a reinterpretation of a novel that is frequently assigned to high school literature classes in the US ('s 'The Scarlet Letter'), at the end of the movie, it is revealed that Brandon's story is also a reinterpretation of a novel that is frequently assigned to high school literature classes ('s 'Huckleberry Finn'). Interpreting the relationship between Huck and Jim as a homoerotic one was not the invention of this movie's screenwriter; it has been a fairly common angle from which to approach interpretation of the book since the 1948 publication of 's essay 'Come Back to the Raft Ag'n, Huck Honey.' An explanation of the use of them and they in different contexts. There, their, or they're? This lesson explains the difference between there, their, and they're. Their is for possession. They're is short for they're. There is a place. The Norse term (whence also Icelandic þeir (“they”), Faroese teir (“they”), Swedish de (“they”), Norwegian Nynorsk dei (“they”)) derives from Proto-Germanic *þai (“those”) (from Proto-Indo-European *to- (“that”)), whence also Old English þā (“those”; whence obsolete English tho), Scots thae, thai, thay (“they; those”). Nov 15, 2017. Define they: those ones —used as third person pronoun serving as the plural of he, she, or it or referring to a group of two or — they in a sentence. You can listen to each sentence as you read it. / Accent Reduction / Accent Neutralization / Reductions / Linking / Improve Your American English Pronunciation. Lynn Liben, a psychologist at Penn State, has studied the effects of gender-coded language — English weaves it in by way of pronouns (she, his) but also identifying nouns (girl, uncle) and honorifics (Mr. And Mrs.) — for about 15 years. In a pair of studies conducted in preschool classrooms in 2008 and 2010, Liben found that when teachers emphasize a gender divide in speech — like saying, “Good morning, boys and girls” — children adopt more intense stereotypes about what boys and girls are supposed to do, and become less likely to play with children of a different gender at recess. “When they see adults talk about gender as a category system,” Liben says, “kids become more vigilant about making the distinction themselves.” Jill Soloway, creator of the Amazon series “Transparent,” is a fan of “they” as a corrective to that phenomenon. “A really interesting thought exercise is to say ‘they’ and ‘them’ for all genders,”. “The promise of this revolution is not having to say, ‘Men do this, women do this.’ ”. Advertisement These gender-neutral constructions, which not so long ago may have sounded odd or even unthinkable to traditionalists, are becoming accepted as standard English. The Washington Post is one of the first to have taken up the cause, welcoming the singular “they” into the paper’s stylebook late last year. And in January, the American Dialect Society voted the singular “they” its, noting its “emerging use as a pronoun to refer to a known person, often as a conscious choice by a person rejecting the traditional gender binary of he and she.”. But central to the appeal of the singular “they” is that it’s often deployed unconsciously. It’s regularly repurposed as a linguistic crutch when an individual’s gender is unknown or irrelevant. You might use it to refer to a hypothetical person who, say, goes to the store and forgets “their” wallet. That casual usage has a long history — it has appeared in Chaucer, Shakespeare, Austen and Shaw. It wasn’t until 1745, when the schoolmistress-turned-grammar-expert Ann Fisher proposed “he” as a universal pronoun for a person of unknown gender, that the use of “they” in the same circumstance was respun as grammatically incorrect. “The Masculine Person answers to the general Name, which comprehends both Male and Female; as, any Person who knows what he says,” she wrote. It’s precisely the vagueness of “they” that makes it a not-so-ideal pronoun replacement. It can obscure a clear gender identification with a blurred one. Think of genderqueer people who are confident in their knowledge of their own gender identity as one that simply doesn’t fit the boxes of “he” or “she”: Calling all of them “they” can make it sound as if someone’s gender is unknowable; it’s the grammatical equivalent of a shrug. In December, “the only sensible solution to English’s lack of a gender-neutral third-person singular personal pronoun,” with “sensible” being the key word. The singular “they” gained favor with The Post’s standard-bearer partly because the presumptive “he” “hasn’t been palatable for decades,” but also because a generic “she” feels “patronizing” and “attempts at made-up pronouns” — like “xe,” “xim,” and “xir” — strike Walsh as “silly.” The New York Times hasn’t officially adopted “they,” but The Times’s standards editor, Phillip B. Corbett, thinks it’s likely to earn a place in the paper’s stylebook as usage evolves. “Eventually, I assume, certain forms will become widely adopted, and that’s the point when it would make sense for us to set out formal style rules,” he told me. “My guess — just a guess — is that ‘they’ is far more likely to become the default pronoun in these cases, rather than ‘xe’ or other neologisms.” in favor of “they” argued that “pronouns (unlike nouns and verbs) are a ‘closed class’ of words, almost never admitting new members.” (The Economist’s style guide, by the way, still calls the honorific Ms. An “ugly” word.) If the point of the gender-neutral pronoun is to get hulking institutions like The Washington Post and The Economist to become comfortable with a concept that currently strikes traditional folks as incomprehensible — the rejection of the gender binary — then “they” feels a little bit like a shortcut on the way to acceptance. It represents a third option outside the binary, sure. But it doesn’t compel people to make mental room for a new word. The media guide for “transgender issues” by Glaad, a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender advocacy group, advises reporters to use whatever pronoun their subjects prefer. If they don’t prefer “they,” using it anyway feels like an erasure of their own identity in favor of society’s new standardized label. In a very real way, accepting the fluidity of gender requires rejecting standards in general. It means opening our “closed class” of pronouns. In “The Argonauts,” Maggie Nelson’s memoir of gender and language, she acknowledges “the Aristotelian, perhaps evolutionary need to put everything into categories,” but embraces another need “to pay homage to the transitive, the flight, the great soup of being in which we actually live.” It’s hard to sum it all up in a word. This article is about the English personal pronoun. For other uses, see. Look up,,, or in Wiktionary, the free dictionary. They is the () in. It can also be used with, particularly in informal contexts, sometimes to of the person referred to. Person (gender) Singular First me my mine myself Second your yours yourself Third Masculine him his himself Feminine her hers herself Neuter its itself them their theirs themselves Plural First us our ours ourselves Second your yours yourselves Third them their theirs themselves. Main article: The is the use of this pronoun as a singular rather than as a plural pronoun. The correctness of this usage is disputed. The Oxford Dictionaries have an article on the usage, saying that it dates back to the 16th century. The singular pronoun they is occasionally found in formal or official texts. For example, a 2008 amendment to the Canadian contains the following text: if a peace officer has reasonable grounds to believe that, because of their physical condition, a person may be incapable of providing a breath sample. (subparagraph 254(3)(a)(ii)) In an article published in in 2009 by and Stewart Kellerman, they read: (1719-78) [an 18th-century British schoolmistress and the first woman to write an English grammar book] was not only a woman of letters but also a prosperous entrepreneur. She ran a school for young ladies and operated a printing business and a newspaper in Newcastle with her husband, Thomas Slack. In short, she was the last person you would expect to suggest that he should apply to both sexes. But apparently she couldn’t get her mind around the idea of using they as a singular. Meanwhile, many great writers —,,,,, and more — continued to use they and company as singulars, never mind the grammarians. In fact, so many people now use they in the old singular way that dictionaries and usage guides are taking a critical look at the prohibition against it., editor of The New Fowler’s, has written that it’s only a matter of time before this practice becomes standard English: “The process now seems irreversible.” ’s Collegiate Dictionary (11th ed.) already finds the singular they acceptable “even in literary and formal contexts,” but the Usage Panel of (4th ed.) isn’t there yet. Generic [ ] The pronoun they can also be used to refer to unspecified people in some often vaguely defined group, as in In Japan they drive on the left. It often refers to the authorities, or to some perceived powerful group, sometimes sinister: They don't want the public to know the whole truth. It can also be used as a gender neutral third person singular pronoun. This idiomatic use avoids formalising the vagueness or unknown fact by not using the formal phrase, 'he/she.' For example, formally 'he or she drove over the body and disappeared,' informally 'they (singular) drove over the body and disappeared.' Etymology [ ] In, was used as the third-person, personal pronoun (in the nominative and ). It was gradually replaced by an borrowing, (nominative plural masculine of the demonstrative, which acted in Old Norse as a plural pronoun), until it was entirely replaced in around the 15th century in. Þeir, in turn, became they as it is known in Modern English today. Þeir originates from * þai-z ('those'), from * toi ('those'). Henry Lee Lucas (August 23, 1936 – March 12, 2001) was an American serial killer who claimed to have killed over 3000 people. Not only horror is my cup of tea but the story behind serial killers does interest me too. But being in the biz for over 15 years I'm mostly not into movies about serial killers. Oh yes, there are some great ones, The Deliberate Stranger (Mark Harmon playing Ted Bundy) for example, still OOP and the other OOP To Catch A Killer (Brian Dennehy playing John Wayne Gacy), and of course Henry:Portrait Of A Serial Killer concerning Henry Lee Lucas (played by Michael Rooker). The movie I just saw also told the story of Henry. But here it's boredom all the way. Were Portrait gives some nasty disturbing scene's (remember the television) this flick just is about, did he kill 3000 persons or not. We see some killings but the blood never flows. We see stabbings in the back, in the neck but the victims never bled. The best part is when Henry and his friend Otis picks up a hitchhiker. What happens next isn't disturbing but is really the best part. The only fact I could agree with is the truth about Henry having an affair with his niece Betty. He did kill his mother but not as stated in this flick. It's sad to see that a flick about two weirdo's doesn't deliver fear. Having admitted to over 300 murders, Henry Lee Lucas was one of the most prolific serial killers in American history. Lucas's story has held particular fascination for filmmakers and has been loosely told in Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer and Confessions of a Serial Killer, but director Michael Feifer (who has also made films about Ed Gein, Ted Bundy, Richard Speck, BTK, and the Boston Strangler) takes a more factual approach with this disturbing biopic. Antonio Sabato Jr. Turns in a chilling performance as Lucas, who, after a lifetime of abuse at the hands of his sadistic mother, embarks on a coldblooded killing spree with the help of fellow drifter Ottis Toole (Kostas Sommer). ½ Poorly casted and lacks shock value. It does touch on other parts of Henry's back story that other movies on the serial killer neglected, and the validity of Henry's crimes are also brought into question as detectives raise serious doubts about the apparant 3000 murders he comitted. Antonio Sabato Jr. Is a decent actor and gives a good performance but I just felt he was miscast as Henry. He reminded me more of Richard Ramirez! The film is nowhere near as good or as disturbing as 'Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer'. Like many others, I saw the world premiere of Clone Wars on Cartoon Network, and I have to say, I was very impressed. George Lucas has done it again! Now I actually have something to look forward to on Friday nights. The characters act pretty much act like they do in the movies, all the voices sound great, the animation is amazing, and the episodes actually have a plot! I will agree, however, that I don't think it was quite necessary for Lucasfilm to release a movie version just for the sake of promoting the television show. I hear that they're making at least a hundred episodes or more, so hopefully they'll live up to the first two. A job well done all around. I prepared myself to write a rant more or less in my review. Damn, was I wrong. After watching the first season on Netflix, I found myself wanting more. Sure the show isn't perfect, no show is, but it's funny, creative, and surprisingly dark at times. I appreciated how the show focused more on the characters more than anything else. No joke, I didn't want Anakin to turn now that I've seen how sarcastic and loving he is, not just the whiny baby we saw in the prequels. I can't wait to find the time to watch season two.
