Marketing will be a challenge, as raw approach works against the melodramatic satisfactions of most post-“Boyz N the Hood” black actioners. Also problematic is the fact that this grim, often brutal portrait of contempo African-American urban life was directed and penned by Caucasians. Nevertheless, “ Tapes” packs more than enough nonexploitative punch to merit play beyond the fest circuit. Theatrical roll-out will require careful, community-based outreach, with ancillary exposure somewhat more assured. More Reviews First-time director Adam Ripp (who produced Bryan Singer’s pre- “Usual Suspects” first feature, “Public Access”) and co-scenarist Stephen Wolfson assembled their screenplay after a long process of interviewing gang members, their families and L.A. Authorities, with much dialogue and character input from a largely nonpro cast. Result has the ring of unvarnished truth, even if pic’s last stretch may strike some as overblown. Setting up the premise that what we see is unedited (though, it must be said, damn pacey) real-life vidcam footage, initial sequence consists of banal L.A. Tourist highlights shot by a middle-class white family on vacation from the Heartland. They soon blunder into the wrong neighborhood, however, and become victims of a carjacking at gunpoint — with said camera ending up in the hands of young Kris (15-year-old newcomer Trivell), who is marginally involved in the drug and stolen goods trade of Alonzo (Darris Love). Kris has a fairly stable home life, though he’s fatherless, and his mother (nicely played by Sonja Marie) has her hands full. She misses early signs that Kris may have found a bad mentor in Alonzo. Latter is an upstanding citizen, however, compared to his accomplice Cyril (Darontay McClendon), whom he and Kris pick up from jail. They haven’t even driven home yet when the burly, volatile Cyril spies an enemy on the sidewalk. Crime When a brutal carjacking yields a videocamera, a teenage boy decides to document his life and the lives of his fellow gangbangers. He promptly beats this unlucky passer-by senseless with a crowbar, in broad daylight. Initiated into the older men’s gang, Kris first suffers a vigorous beating himself, then is promptly whisked along to witness a drive-by killing. Capping the wild night, he loses his virginity at a party. (Prankishly bypassing an explicit scene, pic finds Kris’ camera blinking “low battery” and going dark just as the bedroom action heats up.) Later, he gets to shoot a handgun in a male-bonding interlude with Cyril. Latter chillingly confides his own history of violence, from childhood on, in feature’s longest single take. “Gang Tapes'” strength lies in contrasting gangsta lifestyle segs with others that show the normal life protag unknowingly is leaving behind. We can see Kris is still very much a child, eager to imitate and win approval from whatever adults are available. While fairly packed with incident, feature maintains its illusion of you-are-there immediacy until the one-hour point, when a horrific home-invasion assault ratchets up the shock quotient a bit too zestfully. From then on, violent repercussions arise almost nonstop, ending in a final tragedy that would carry more weight if it didn’t cap an already overloaded closing reel. By compressing so many worst-scenario incidents in its windup, “Gang Tapes” comes close to deflating a hitherto sound grasp on situational authenticity. Some viewers may find even the earlier progress too relentless and depressing, though filmmakers do balance that impact with just enough offhand tenderness and humor. Fortunately, overall package is too strong to be sunk by last act’s overkill, with improv-based dialogue, excellent perfs and location shooting around Watts and South-Central L.A. All lending verite pretense considerable punch. Lensing is willfully erratic, cuts abrupt, though there’s subtle accommodation to general tastes in editing that’s rough-surfaced but quite brisk and crafty in effect. Aptly, there’s no soundtrack music (apart from that heard on boom boxes) until final credit crawl. Gang Tapes Production: A Lions Gate Films presentation of a Thomas Edison Invention production. Share A Theory of Everything? • By Brian Greene • Posted 10.28.03 • NOVA The fundamental particles of the universe that physicists have identified—electrons, neutrinos, quarks, and so on—are the 'letters' of all matter. Just like their linguistic counterparts, they appear to have no further internal substructure. String theory proclaims otherwise. According to string theory, if we could examine these particles with even greater precision—a precision many orders of magnitude beyond our present technological capacity—we would find that each is not pointlike but instead consists of a tiny, one-dimensional loop. Like an infinitely thin rubber band, each particle contains a vibrating, oscillating, dancing filament that physicists have named a string. Although it is by no means obvious, this simple replacement of point-particle material constituents with strings resolves the incompatibility between quantum mechanics and general relativity (which, as currently formulated, cannot both be right). String theory thereby unravels the central Gordian knot of contemporary theoretical physics. This is a tremendous achievement, but it is only part of the reason string theory has generated such excitement. Field of dreams In Einstein's day, the strong and weak forces had not yet been discovered, but he found the existence of even two distinct forces—gravity and electromagnetism—deeply troubling. Einstein did not accept that nature is founded on such an extravagant design. This launched his 30-year voyage in search of the so-called unified field theory that he hoped would show that these two forces are really manifestations of one grand underlying principle. This quixotic quest isolated Einstein from the mainstream of physics, which, understandably, was far more excited about delving into the newly emerging framework of quantum mechanics. The Theory of Everything has 8,987 ratings and 512 reviews. Saleh said: یکی از خوبی هایی که کتاب های هاوکینگ داره اینه که. He wrote to a friend in the early 1940s, 'I have become a lonely old chap who is mainly known because he doesn't wear socks and who is exhibited as a curiosity on special occasions.' Einstein was simply ahead of his time. More than half a century later, his dream of a unified theory has become the Holy Grail of modern physics. And a sizeable part of the physics and mathematics community is becoming increasingly convinced that string theory may provide the answer. From one principle—that everything at its most microscopic level consists of combinations of vibrating strands—string theory provides a single explanatory framework capable of encompassing all forces and all matter. String theory is sometimes described as possibly being the 'theory of everything.' String theory proclaims, for instance, that the observed particle properties—that is, the different masses and other properties of both the fundamental particles and the force particles associated with the four forces of nature (the strong and weak nuclear forces, electromagnetism, and gravity)—are a reflection of the various ways in which a string can vibrate. Just as the strings on a violin or on a piano have resonant frequencies at which they prefer to vibrate—patterns that our ears sense as various musical notes and their higher harmonics—the same holds true for the loops of string theory. But rather than producing musical notes, each of the preferred mass and force charges are determined by the string's oscillatory pattern. The electron is a string vibrating one way, the up-quark is a string vibrating another way, and so on. Far from being a collection of chaotic experimental facts, particle properties in string theory are the manifestation of one and the same physical feature: the resonant patterns of vibration—the music, so to speak—of fundamental loops of string. The same idea applies to the forces of nature as well. Force particles are also associated with particular patterns of string vibration and hence everything, all matter and all forces, is unified under the same rubric of microscopic string oscillations—the 'notes' that strings can play. A theory to end theories For the first time in the history of physics we therefore have a framework with the capacity to explain every fundamental feature upon which the universe is constructed. For this reason string theory is sometimes described as possibly being the 'theory of everything' (T.O.E.) or the 'ultimate' or 'final' theory. These grandiose descriptive terms are meant to signify the deepest possible theory of physics—a theory that underlies all others, one that does not require or even allow for a deeper explanatory base. In practice, many string theorists take a more down-to-earth approach and think of a T.O.E. In the more limited sense of a theory that can explain the properties of the fundamental particles and the properties of the forces by which they interact and influence one another. A staunch reductionist would claim that this is no limitation at all, and that in principle absolutely everything, from the Big Bang to daydreams, can be described in terms of underlying microscopic physical processes involving the fundamental constituents of matter. If you understand everything about the ingredients, the reductionist argues, you understand everything. The reductionist philosophy easily ignites heated debate. Many find it fatuous and downright repugnant to claim that the wonders of life and the universe are mere reflections of microscopic particles engaged in a pointless dance fully choreographed by the laws of physics. Is it really the case that feelings of joy, sorrow, or boredom are nothing but chemical reactions in the brain—reactions between molecules and atoms that, even more microscopically, are reactions between some of the fundamental particles, which are really just vibrating strings? In response to this line of criticism, Nobel laureate Steven Weinberg cautions in Dreams of a Final Theory: At the other end of the spectrum are the opponents of reductionism who are appalled by what they feel to be the bleakness of modern science. To whatever extent they and their world can be reduced to a matter of particles or fields and their interactions, they feel diminished by that knowledge.I would not try to answer these critics with a pep talk about the beauties of modern science. The reductionist worldview is chilling and impersonal. It has to be accepted as it is, not because we like it, but because that is the way the world works. Some agree with this stark view, some don't. Others have tried to argue that developments such as chaos theory tell us that new kinds of laws come into play when the level of complexity of a system increases. Understanding the behavior of an electron or quark is one thing; using this knowledge to understand the behavior of a tornado is quite another. On this point, most agree. But opinions diverge on whether the diverse and often unexpected phenomena that can occur in systems more complex than individual particles truly represent new physical principles at work, or whether the principles involved are derivative, relying, albeit in a terribly complicated way, on the physical principles governing the enormously large number of elementary constituents. The discovery of the final theory would not spell the end of science. Quite the contrary. My own feeling is that they do not represent new and independent laws of physics. Although it would be hard to explain the properties of a tornado in terms of the physics of electrons and quarks, I see this as a matter of calculational impasse, not an indicator of the need for new physical laws. But again, there are some who disagree with this view. A fresh start for science What is largely beyond question, and is of primary importance to the journey described in my book The Elegant Universe, is that even if one accepts the debatable reasoning of the staunch reductionist, principle is one thing and practice quite another. Almost everyone agrees that finding the T.O.E. Would in no way mean that psychology, biology, geology, chemistry, or even physics had been solved or in some sense subsumed. The universe is such a wonderfully rich and complex place that the discovery of the final theory, in the sense we are describing here, would not spell the end of science. Quite the contrary: The discovery of the T.O.E.—the ultimate explanation of the universe at its most microscopic level, a theory that does not rely on any deeper explanation—would provide the firmest foundation on which to build our understanding of the world. Its discovery would mark a beginning, not an end. The ultimate theory would provide an unshakable pillar of coherence forever assuring us that the universe is a comprehensible place. Little was expected from Stephen Hawking, a bright but shiftless student of cosmology, given just two years to live following the diagnosis of a fatal illness at 21 years of age. He became galvanized, however, by the love of fellow Cambridge student, Jane Wilde, and he went on to be called the successor to Einstein, as well as a husband and father to their three children. Over the course of their marriage as Stephen’s body collapsed and his academic renown soared, fault lines were exposed that tested the lineaments of their relationship and dramatically altered the course of both of their lives. On the 25 th of March 1821 when Germanos III of Old Patras gave the speech about “Eleftheria I Thanatos” (Freedom or Death), the against the Turkish occupation that held the country captive for 400 years began. The uprising started from the south of Greece, where most of the heroes of the Greek Revolution used to reside. The liberation of Greeks, which was one of the most important moments in the country’s history, has been commemorated many times in cinema. There are many movies that shed light on the Greek struggle to freedom. These “classics” are a good way for young people to learn their country’s history and remember the efforts and struggles of their forefathers. Firstly, one of the greatest Greek movies about the 1821 Revolution was “Bouboulina,” which was filmed in 1959 and was directed by Kostas Andritsos, starring Irene Papas and Andreas Barkoulis. It is a historical biographical drama about the female naval commander, Laskarina Bouboulina, a heroine of the Greek Revolution that gathered her troops and started the uprising on the island of Spetses. She also donated most of her possessions and money to the Greek war for independence and she herself fought against the enemy. This movie is very accurate and depicts the historical facts exactly as they happened. Another noteworthy movie is “I Exodos tou Mesolongiou,” (The Exit from Missolonghi) from 1965, directed by Dimitris Doukas, in which starred many great actors of that era, such as Manos Katrakis, Tzavalas Karousos and Anna Iasonidou. In April 1826, the Greeks started an uprising against the Turks, the heroic exit from the “sacred city of Missolonghi.” The movie depicts the heroism and sacrifice of the Greeks in order to free their homeland from the enemy. Next on our list is the famous movie “Manto Mavrogenous” directed by Kostas Karagiannis in 1971., one of the most well-known Greek actresses took on the role of Manto Mavrogenous and Petros Fyssoun played the role of Demetrios Ypsilantis, another great figure of the Greek Revolution. Manto Mavrogenous — a few years after the uprising in which she was actively involved — requests to receive a soldier’s pension and reminisces about her past, her love for Prince Demetrios Ypsilantis and schemes of her enemies. This was the first attempt to make a Greek epic war movie about the 1821 Revolution, with great performances and historical accuracy. Last but not least, the movie “I megali stigmi tou ’21: Papaflessas” (A Great 1821 moment: Papaflessas), is one of the most important Greek war movie productions, directed by Erricos Andreou and starring Dimitris Papamichael and Alekos Alexandrakis. The movie depicts the life and work of 1821 Greek hero, Gregorios Flessas, or Papaflessas. He was a cleric who during the liberation struggle of the Greeks against the Turks, organized the troops and declared war against the enemy. Brandon Lang loves football: an injury keeps him from the pros, but his quarterback's anticipation makes him a brilliant predictor of games' outcomes. Needing money, he leaves Vegas for Manhattan to work for Walter Abrams advising gamblers. Walter has a doting wife, a young daughter, and a thriving business, but he has problems: a bum heart, a belief he's a master manipulator, and addictions barely kept in check. He remakes Brandon, and a father-son relationship grows. Then, things go awry. Walter may be running a con. The odds against Brandon mount. Matthew McConaughey is Brandon Lang, a former college football star who devastated his knee and was never able to play professionally. Six years later he's recording 'sports predictions' for a 1-900 number in Las Vegas and living with his mom and younger brother, still dreaming of playing professional football one day. He never hears from the Cowboys, but he does get a call from Walter Abrams (the Godfather himself, Al Pacino), an entrepreneur who runs his own sports betting business, inviting him to move to New York and work for him. Though Brandon Lang is the hero of the story, Walter Abrams is the beating heart of Two For The Money. He's a recovered gambling addict who runs his own empire of 'sports betting advisers.' No other film has ever explored the psyche of the gambling addict so precisely and intimately. Abrams describes what it feels like to win, but even more fascinatingly, he discusses the addict's subconscious desire to loose it all. Gambling addicts don't bury themselves in debt because they're sure they can win. They do it because they need to loose everything to feel alive. Two For The Money is better than I expected. The characters are rich and complex and the story is never dull. Hell, this movie is worth seeing for the topless McConaughey shots alone. 2010 dvd psychotronic room japanese horror u/r japan japanese (2010) (unrated dir.cut) helldriver. An amusing, bemusing, exciting mishmash of craziness that gives new meaning to the word 'ridiculous'. But Helldriver, like so many of these gonzo films, just doesn't quite pull off what it's aiming for. And that's certainly not for lack of trying. This tale of zombies and chainsaw swords throws everything at the viewer possible, and I have to commend the filmmakers for the sheer levels of WTF they came up with. Zombie women using zombie babies attached by zombie umbilical cords as weapon, truck versus zombie sword fights, and a zombie car are just a few of the insane ideas you'll see on display, here. I can't count the number of times I simply had to shake my head and smile at the fact that someone came up with all of this stuff. There's even a battle near the end that's eerily reminiscent of The Battle of Helm's Deep in The Two Towers, except with way fewer humans and WAY more blood. The inventiveness of Helldriver is the best thing it has going for it, by far. But amidst all the blood fountains and giant flying zombies made out of smaller zombies, the director and writers forgot to add the entertainment. How a movie can be absolutely insane and so dull at the same time is a mystery, to me. The plot is non-existent, even for this kind of flick. Our main character has a back-story with an evil mother and uncle that leads to the entire zombie infestation and her transformation into a half-mechanical warrior, but the scenes dealing with that are among the most boring in the entire movie. There are really no likable or interesting characters, either, which would have gone a long way towards making Helldriver easier to enjoy. It might be worth checking out for the undeniable strangeness of it all, but I still have to say I was more disappointed than pleased with Helldriver. ½ Yoshihiro Nishimura shows no shame with Helldriver. There isn't much detail to the story, as all the abstractness and over the top fun is just there to be accepted. Heck, the opening title and credits don't appear to at least a third of the way into the film. For what the story has to offer, the 105 minute run time is a bit long. The film indulges in long drawn out gore sequences and blood showers to pass the time between plot movements. The violence dishes out the pain in all manners. Buckets and more buckets of blood shoot into the sky, canvas the floors, and soak the cameras. Sure, it is unrealistic, but that is exactly what this picture goes for. Outrageous violent behavior and over the top deaths. The action is somewhat hindered by shaky closeup camerawork and mediocre CG, but in the grand scheme of things, it is acceptable. To add to the fun, many characters are out of the ordinary, annoying, or just a waste of time. They are also overacted. Yumiko Hara is one of the few that holds herself in check and doesn't get to wild with her character. Eihi Shiina is underused; however she does do a reasonable job. To sum it all up, Helldriver puts a lot of attention on the extreme and not enough on the characters and story. Chainsaw anyone? Tags:,, Description: Samantha Willows (Leighton Meester) is a bright-eyed college freshman ready to endure the often humiliating traditions of pledge week if it means being accepted into Delta Phi Theta, one of the most prestigious sororities in the country. But her enthusiasm turns to dread when she begins to sense something sinister about the sorority house and some of its sisters, who appear to be sharing a closely guarded secret. After the death of a Delta Phi Theta member, Samantha considers the unimaginable - could an evil, murderous force be residing within the walls of the sorority house? On Friday night, after we saw the movie Hanna, a friend Jeff and I returned back to my house and retreated to my bedroom where he eventually fell asleep and I tried to sleep. Insomnia, however, won out and I ended up watching a Lifetime horror movie called. Why Was I Watching It? I couldn’t get to sleep. So, I turned on the TV, checked out what was on the DVR, and as soon as I saw The Haunting of Sorority Row, I knew what I had to do. Somehow, I forgot that, regardless of how low I turned down the sound the last time I was watching it, whenever I turn on my TV, the volume is always reset to full blast. So, as soon as I hit play, the TV literally thundered to life and woke up not only Jeff but probably the rest of the neighborhood as well. As I frantically turned down the volume, Jeff sat up in bed and asked, “What’s this?” “It’s a movie,” I said, “Sorry, I couldn’t sleep.” “I bet it’s a horror film,” he said. “Yeah,” I nodded. Then I looked over my shoulder, gave him my wicked little smile (well, I like to think of it as being my wicked little smile), and I added, “It’s a Lifetime horror film.” “Oh,” he replied, sounding much less enthusiastic. Anyway, The Haunting of Sorority Row put him back to sleep in about five minutes. Me, I still haven’t slept which is why I’m still sitting here in my beloved Pirates t-shirt while Jeff peacefully sleeps behind me. Maybe after I finish writing this, I’ll give sleep another chance. What’s The Movie About? It’s about a haunting on sorority row. More specifically, it’s about a really angry ghost who is determined to kill the four sorority sisters who are hiding a secret. Their ringleader is Leslie who is played by an actress named Lisa Marie Caruk. And that’s a great name. Anyway, Blair Waldorf herself, Leighton Meester, is also pledging this haunted sorority and she is determined to set things right. Oh, this is a Lifetime Movie so everything worked. I mean, you know what you’re getting with Lifetime and part of the reason why we love Lifetime movies is because they’re all exactly the same. The perfect Lifetime Movie is the epitome of a stupid movie that can be best enjoyed by intelligent women with a healthy sense of the absurd. I’d like to think that I qualify on all three of those. That said, there were a few things that worked even if you decided to ignore the fact that they were found in a Lifetime film. Not surprisingly, the nearly-all female cast was a lot more likable and their roles were a bit more developed than you’d expect to find in a horror film. Leighton Meester is probably one of the most underrated actresses working right now and she does a great job playing the film’s “final girl” while Lisa Marie Caruk has a lot of fun playing the bullying head of the Sorority. Another thing that worked here was the great pleasure that I got out of imagining how many of you guys rented this film thinking it was a typical, Dead Women In Lingerie Slasher Film just to discover that it was instead a Lifetime movie. What Didn’t Work? This film works pretty well as a Lifetime movie but it totally sucks as a horror film. A lot of this is due to the fact that this is a TV movie which pretty much means that it can’t really show anything that would scare us. As often happens in Lifetime movies, the main character’s boyfriend is a eunuch. In this one, we’re asked to believe that an 18 year-old boy would refuse to have premarital sex with Leighton Meester. Because boys have so much self-control Finally, this is another one of those films that suffers from having a final twist that’s so obvious that most viewers will figure it out before the movie even begins. Yes, it’s that obvious. Just like me!” Moments There’s a scene in which one of the unfortunately sorority sisters ends up getting trapped in the shower and scalded to death by hot water. This is scene vaguely disturbed me because 1) I’m claustrophobic, 2) I have a fear of scalding water, and 3) I’ve actually managed to get trapped in a shower before and I had to scream and scream until someone heard me, ran into the bathroom, and told me that I needed to pull (as opposed to pushing) the shower door in order to open it. Of course, my hands and arms were too busy trying to cover up me for me to take his advice on the door. Sir,” and then waited until he left. Otherwise, it was hard for me to relate to this film because I never pledged nor did I ever want to pledge a sorority in college. I was actually invited to do so by one of them but, at the time, I said, “No, that’s way too bourgeois for me.” “Bourgeois?” she replied, confused. Lessons Learned I definitely did the right thing by never joining a sorority. Is the soon-to-be released film from El Revolcadero and Canana, the product ion film company of Gael Ga rcia Bernal and Diego Luna ( Y Tu Mama Tambien). It’s a generational gem of two Mexican teens, Maru and Roman, frustrated by the reclusion of their parents a nd society, decide to take on an adventure; finding love as they make a pact, to stay togethe r no matter what. But where can two angry kids go? Perhaps to the roof of their own house, as their relationship unfolds its beauty and tricks, they are revealing themselves to an adult world that doesn’t seem to understand them. It’s an explosive and demanding film, executed by Gerardo Naranjo with a powerful, bleak and energetic scope to visualize Maru and Roman, their brave and confused relationship and their fantasized stories. The film’s music supervisor Lynn Fainchtein did an extraordinary job placing the right musical passages and songs at the most precise moments. Everything was settled for a commercially released soundtrack that features the music from the film, but it was passed on by several labels. With that said, this is my reinterpretation of the movie, through songs. This release is the official soundtrack of the film, which with the disposition and willingness of 22 different artists and their labels is available here, entirely for free. My initial idea to have a soundtrack with Mexican bands was put aside once realizing the narrative and themes of the movie are not exclusive for Mexico, but all Iberoamerica. Voy a Explotar opens yet another space for discussion, about rebelliousness, promises, our identity and the shared feeling that somehow, we had been forgotten by somebody out there. This is an explosive shout for anyone willing to hear it, melodic and violent as the cinematic experience. These are the songs of Maru and Roman, and the details.
